I see a lot of people carrying alcohol wipes/prep pads in their boo boo and FAK.

I'm curious about options to replace these with Zeiss Lens Cleaning wipes to offer far more utility especially when it comes to on person carry.

    Here is my personal assessment:

    Cost: Tie

-Zeiss $2.88 at my local Walmart for 50
-Prep pad $3.00 allover for 200

For something like this where I am not using thousands a year the difference between 6 cents a unit and 2 cents a unit are irrelevant to me.

Active Ingredient: Tie but maybe prep pads

The MSDS for the Zeiss wipes list 70% isopropyl alcohol as the only ingredient so it is the same as the alcohol prep pads I have seen. (edit: I can no longer find solid support that the Zeiss wipes are at 70% w/w isopropyl. See a couple of post below for MSDS info)

    Packed Size: Prep pad

The basic width and height is more or less the same but the prep pads are very thin. I would say it takes 4 prep pads to equal the thickness of a Zeiss wipe. However, the prep pad packages is VERY thin so 4x VERY thin still makes the Zeiss Wipe package thin.
As you can see in my hygiene kit with gum, Zeiss wipe, and floss stick it is still a nice thin kit and easily fits into a credit card slot in my BigSkinny.

    Application: Zeiss wipe +++

I'm not concerned about the survivalist aspects of the alcohol wipes but I feel the Zeiss wipe share many of the same properties in this regard. From my COMPLETELY UNEDUCATED and UNINFORMED (that is where you guys/gals come in) the only real good use for the pre pads are to…well pre an area for an injection or blood draw. They are tiny and mildly abrasive strips of cotton.

The Zeiss has substantially more surface area (about the size of my hand) and this leads too many more FAK/hygiene applications than the prep pads are suited for.

    ·Cleaning camera lens

oMy kid always finds a way to get his fingers on my point and shoot lenses and when out on the town this can mean the difference between a good picture and poo. This is what the product is designed to do and does a very good job. A prep pad would not get anywhere near my lenses.

    ·Great general lens/glass clearer
oGlasses, phones, monitors, laptops, mirrors… Where are surrounded by transparent material and having these clean just makes the day go by a little better.

    ·Disinfectant wipes
oGiven their large size these work really well for cleaning all sorts of items that you would like to clean off and disinfect (hands, phone receiver, door knobs…) While I will be switching over to BZK wipes for my wallet FAK kit I don't see why these could not be used as a reasonable (if not a little painful) replacement, and given their size, easier to perform the task than the prep pad.

    ·Napkin
oThese work rather well as a towelet and have the added benefit of being antimicrobial.

Ok so that is the village idiots take on the subject…your thoughts?

Any wipe that is free does it for me but for a lens I use generic lens cleaner and a microfibre cloth. I don't keep any wipe sachets with me but there a couple in my desk covered in dust

That's not available in the UK ,,,,,, is it any good? I'm truly fed up with fingerprints and smudges appearing on my specs even when I don't touch them

What? Glass Wax? Yeah, it's pretty good. I don't know of anything that'll totally eliminate fingerprints, etc. If you order off Amazon, will they ship to UK? There's lots of retailers with it available. Just need to find one to ship. Or, were you referring to another product? I like it on the screens for the phones and tablets.

I have the Zess wipes in all my EDC bags, and FAK for all the same reasons you listed. I can't stand to have dirty glasses, and I am also a little bit, ok more then a little, OCD about smudges on my smart phone and watch crystal. I think it is a great idea!!!

All else being equal between the two products, I'd go with the Zeiss wipes for all of the reasons you mentioned. They'll do everything the prep pads will, the reverse is not true. Prep pads are cheaper but are tiny and leave lint all over.

I've used prep pads for cleaning camera lenses and it works but not nearly as well. Mainly as a source of fluid followed up by regular lens tissue. The Zeiss wipes are more of a single solution, though I still find it better to use two, the first one to clean your fingers, second one for the lens. While they do cost more, it's still quite reasonable. The increased versatility more than offsets the cost.

So unless one is diabetic or otherwise is going through enough of them for cost to become a factor, it's hard to go wrong with the lens wipes.

Are we sure these are okay for prep? There aren't any other chemicals in the lens cleaning cloth?

Ok, so the MSDS trail for these were not as clear as I remember when I researched them sometime ago but here is the MSDS I feel is the correct one for this product:

    http://www.bluelakeproducts.com/DOCUMENTS/Zeiss_Lens_Towelette_MSDS.pdf

This one is associated with the product as well but I think this is the pump spray and not the wipes:
    http://www.photodon.com/zeissMSDS.pdf

Then finally there is this one but I think these items are European:
    http://www1.af-net.com/msds/001/001CLCK2.pdf

None of these list any chemical but alcohol. The EU one list both ethanol (yumm) and Propan-2-OL which is isopropyl which I assuem is to denature the ethanol (booo).

I have not seen any MSDS for this product that list any other substance but ethanol or isopropyl. However, I can not find any solid support to my 70% claim for this product so I will edit my original comment.

I carry the Zeiss wipes with me in my EDC bag. Great for wiping lenses without scratching (unlike kleenex or paper towels). I started carrying them so that I could always wipe my motorcycle helmet visor clean and I needed something safe for it's transitions SolFX coating. Now I use them for everything, but mainly my sunglasses, helmet, phone.

I buy mine at Sam's Club; 200 for $8.80 IIRC.

I have a crapload of alcohol prep pads as they end up leftover in my pockets when I get home from work in the hospital... you won't find those anywhere but my IFAK.

    keeper and Gnarly like this.

hmmm I have that problem with O2 flowmeter christmas tree adaptors. My wife is sick of finding them in the washing machine after she washes my scrubs. If only I could figure out a EDC purpose for those.

For you guys with older Alcohol prep pads stashed, there was a HUGE recall on millions of them 12-18 months ago TRIAD was on the list and many other names custom labeled by them for other companies. some were found contaminated and there were infections reported. I will post the link when I find it. I have both lens cleaner and prep pads but will only use lens pads as a prep pad for cuts if I can confirm they only contain alcohol. I use zeiss pads and have Tiffen liquid lens cleaner in quart bottles which is wicked excellent, dries streak free and won't hurt coatings.

I cleaned out my IFAKs and medic bags of the older prep pads and bought new stuff, I use the old ones for binos and spotting scope lens cleaner. In an Escape From New York situation anything goes;) but I would/do carry both as your FAK should carry only quality sterile items

There's some news you can use boys and girls. Ok, so if a facility that specializes in making medical accessories, which has to have high quality control in place, can't keep their isopropyl safe I'm losing faith in my lens wipes for any type of wound cleaning unless I see Kurt Russell walking around.

General disinfecting I'm still feeling good. Hmmm...I have a strange urge to find an eye patch all of the sudden...
